The components of a dental implant.

Dental care as such has improved a lot over the years. We have extensive technology that has been developed to give us the perfect smile. And yet, despite all this, millions of people suffer from tooth loss. One of the best improvements in Dental Care that exists today is ‘Dental Implants’.  Dental implants are components that are used to replace our tooth roots. They provide a foundation for our teeth, permanent and replacement teeth. An implant can be very helpful. It improves appearance and speech. It also improves oral health. An implant lasts many years if taken care of and are very convenient. In general, implants have a success rate of 98%. As long as they have healthy gums, anyone can get implants.

The first step in getting an implant is the tooth root implant. In this step, a small titanium post is placed in the bone socket. As the bone heals, it heals around the implant securing it. This can take anytime between 6-12 weeks depending on the individual.

Once the implant is secured, the abutment (small connector post) is attached to the post. This will hold the new teeth secure.

Impressions of the teeth are taken and the new tooth is based on the model of your bite that is created.

The process of getting an implant is not very painful. In some cases, local anaesthesia can be given during the procedure. The implant, however, needs to be taken care of. It needs to be brushed and flossed like the regular teeth. Antibacterial mouthwash also helps.

There aren’t many risks in the procedure. But as with any surgery, there could be small risks like infection or excessive bleeding. In the long term, implants can be very useful and comfortable for the patients.
